Communications Lead

Whose Knowledge? is seeking a creative, experienced and bold communications lead to join our efforts to make the internet for and from us all.

More about us:

Whose Knowledge? is a global campaign to center the knowledge of marginalized communities (the majority of the world) on the internet. Most public knowledge online has so far been written by white men from Europe and North America. To address this, we work particularly with women, people of color, LGBTQI communities, indigenous peoples and others from the Global South to build and represent more of all of our own knowledge online.

You will be responsible for creating new forms of awareness and engagement for our global campaign as well as manage our existing communications channels. If you are skilled at telling stories through video and images, interested in experimenting with new things, and excited about mission-driven initiatives, this is the gig for you.

This is a paid contractor role, 20-30 hours a week for 6 months (March – August 2018), with the potential to renew. The hourly rate for this position will range from $20 to $40 per hour, based on experience.

  • Make sure our online presence is aligned with our values and is visually welcoming and inspiring for a diverse audience around the world.
  • Create written and visual resources for our existing communication channels (website, newsletter, social media, etc).
  • Propose and implement new communication strategies for our existing and potential online spaces.
  • Develop communications materials that will support specific initiatives, communities and audiences.
  • Be the point person for inquiries, newsletter sign ups and our info@ contact address.
  • Keep our communications up to date, especially on our website and with periodic updates to our communities, including partners and funders.
  • Maintain our Wikimedia presence by updating our pages on Meta-wiki and uploading files to Commons.
  • Generate content in more than 1 language, engaging volunteer translators where needed.
  • Support the team with press and media inquiries.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Strong feminist and anti-colonial values.
  • Enthusiasm and experience working with open source ideas, tools and licenses like Creative Commons.
  • Lots of initiative, strategic thinking and storytelling abilities.
  • Work experience with written, verbal and visual communications plus some media/press knowledge.
  • Social media fever. You’ll find inspiration and hang out on various platforms where our communities are.
  • Passion for creating engaging content using video, images and voice. Editing, processing and organizing skills for visual content are a huge plus.
  • Experience with blogging tools like WordPress, and mass correspondence tools like Mailchimp.
  • A multilingual background.

Candidates from the Global South are strongly encouraged to apply!
